What influences how we make moral decisions? Should morality change based on circumstances or do you think morality should be fixed and never change? What role do rules or consequences have to play in how you make decisions? Which is more important: Rules or Consequences when making decisions and why? Use what we have talked about this term to write a paragraph in answer to these questions. Remember to use specific examples to bring your answer to life. | |

How do we make ethical decisions? - in my opinion people should make ethical decisions based on past experience, what your mind is telling you to do not your heart, and what people have told you do to in similar situations in the past. Also you should make ethical decisions based on the outcome, if the outcome could lead to hurting someones feelings then don't do it, but if it doesn't and it can help many people then it is okay.

to make a ethical decision you must base the decision made on past experiences. you must think of the decision with you brain and try not get emotions involved with the decision.you must also base the decision on the outcome. i also think that you can base decision on religious beliefs such as in Christianity the bible says love thy neighbor

I think it depends on the circumstances you are in as to what moral codes you follow. For example, if a little child asks you if a drawing they have done is good but it is terrible then you will probably tell the child that it is really good. Yet if the same thing happened but an adult said it then you would probably say what you thought of it. I think that white lies do not really count as lying as you are doing it for the greater good; you are just trying to make the child feel happy. I think that some moral rules are interesting, like if you are a soldier and you are fighting in a war then does the commandment: “do not kill” still apply as killing is your job? I think it does as if you are thinking and trying to obey the commandments then you probably would not have chosen to be a soldier. Yet on the other hand lots of people of faith are still joining the army. In a way they could be thinking “the killing isn't done by me. It’s the government/ruling powers killing. I am just following their orders.”

Every single person is different and as a result all the actions they take are also different. The Moral choices we make are no exception. Our background, personality, friends and parents all influence the ways in which we make decisions, our past experiences and conscience also affect this. However circumstances change and so should the choices we make, and so as human beings we try to make the decision that is based upon a moral, or the decision that we deem as moral and due to our indifference, is a subjective matter. I think that morality is based on circumstance rather than a framework of rules as certain scenarios require a different moral choice the get the best outcome. If you were hiding someone in your house for example and somebody knocked on your door and said that they were going to kill him if they found him then you would not reveal his location to the killer. It is not necessarily the most moral choice as you are lying but it is the most natural choice as every human life is very important and should not be wasted for a sense of moral indulgence because you did the “right” thing. If morality were fixed then human beings would have no free will and would be forced to live out set lives due to their lack of choice, this would mean that things like personality would not exist and there would be no variation. Rules and consequences are the two main variables when trying to make a decision or rectify a previous one as they promote different ways of finding the best outcome. Follow the rules but suffer the consequence or break the rules and create a good consequence. I think that consequences are the most important when making decisions as they determine what will happen in the future and, in my opinion, create a much greater insight into what the right decision will be.

I think to make a moral decision you should look to your self and them people you love and care about, because they know you and know what would be the best decision to make. Although I would go to the people I know and care about some might go to the priest or the pope to find out the religious decision to make. I would also ask my self/ conscience and think about what to do and make a logical decision.

Myles, can you give an example of a moral decision or an ethical situation which can bring your ideas to life? Why do you think Kant cared so much about rules?

On making decisions both consequences and rules are very important.i think this because when you follow the rules, you can get praised and achieve things. But you can break the rules you have consequences, these consequences can be good because they help you if you get into these situations in the future. This can be good and bad because you wont want to get the punishment at first but it is good for future circumstances.

Throughout history, there have been countless attempts via various different religious or political movements to influence your way of your thinking as well as your ideals, whatever they may be. Some may be more 'ethically moral' than others. An example of the more 'negative' ideals to live by comes from the American racist organisation, the "Ku Klux Klan". Within one of their endless rulebooks for their cult, one might happen upon a certain rule going something like..."To touch a "racial minority"(though not the term used) is forbidden and considered pollution of the body and mind". This rule is most likely going lead you to be a more negative, spiteful person, influencing your decision to possibly negatively affect this "racial minority". For a more positive example we have some religious texts such as the "Bible", "The Kojiki","The Heart Sutra" or the "Four Noble Truths". An example of this appears in the "Four Noble Truths" where it reads "You should know your sufferings". This, in my opinion, means that when you learn what gives you suffering and pain, it will bring you Karma. To dispel Karma can be to bring around positive emotions and choices therefore making a more peaceful, positive decision.

I think the way you make moral decisions is by thinking about it. If you really think it through you can make the right decisions.

I think rules is more important when making decisions because if you don't stick to the rule your not playing fare and that means you won't be making a fare choise

Religion helps followers to make decisions that are pleasing to God and create a society where people respect and care for each other. People use a variety of sources of authority to help them make a decision. For example:

I believe that a moral society and moral choices are based on the circumstances of the situation. Humanists are people who say that choices are based on facts, circumstances and outcomes. Even though humanists believe in outcomes I personally believe that rules are more important than consequences because the rules are there to stop the bad consequences from happening.

Making moral decisions is critical to the way you live. For example if you find a £10 in a draw at home should you take it? This expresses if stealing is all wrong because if you steal you could be stealing to help others like stealing medicine for the sick or food for the poor. If you make the wrong choice like steal something for someone and you regret it you can talk to someone about it. Making a moral decision can be one of the hardest choices you've ever had to make.

Personaly I think that mora decisions are important to a daily lifestye. An example of this would be if you should ask someone to be your girlfriend or boyfriend. If you dont know this person very well you should really concider doing it. Another example of this would be if you see a 10 pound note should you take it or leave it even if it is not yours.

I think morality should be based on circumstances. Morality means principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behaviours. If we do something that follows rules, but it results in bad consequences then I think it is not morality. For example let's say your friend tried some new clothes on and it looked absolutely horrible. If you say "it look really bad", it will upset your friend. Obviously rules are important too but, it depends what the situation is and what the consequences are. Therefore I think about the situation I'm in and the consequences before I make decisions.

A good example of a moral decision is that if there was a recently released prisoner, who was searching for a job a good man or woman would give the prisoner a second chance as everyone deserves a second chance, but a bad person would not give the prisoner the benefit of the doubt as they would not believe in a second chance for the prisoner, even if the prisoner was completely sorry for what he did.

Some of you have referred to conscience; our inner voice of right and wrong. Some Christians believe this to be the voice of God inside us.

I think moral decisions are the religious ethics of how and why we are influenced by what god does and that he leaves footprints that we can follow as rules.
