In your comments, lots of you have written about the need to avoid 'Stooping to the Bully's level'. What does this mean? How can punishments be made more effective?
Have a read about this incident in Ohio here. In cases of Disablist Bullying (Bullying directed at Disabled people and their families), what is the appropriate punishment and why? For what reasons might the judge think humiliation is an appropriate punishment? Would humiliation encourage the bully to reform?

I think that humiliating someone does not solve the problem.

I think that humiliating the bully does not do us any good. Humiliation is usually rooted in power and the desire to make another person embarrassed, scared or isolated.People think just because they have the power they need to use when they shouldn't. When someone is humiliated they are known by others for the wrong things causing problems such as not being nice this would repel someone from the humiliated person.

Humiliation can be good for bullies but it can also be bad. It can be good because if the bully humiliated the victim it can mean that it can only be fair for the bully to get humiliated himself/herself. Perhaps being humiliated could mean that the bully would stop bullying others.

Bullying is a serious matter. It takes it's toll not only physically but also mentally. If one is being bullied by someone(s), they will begin to sink into some kind of isolated, impenetrable shell that will only harden as the psychological torment continues. They will also become socially less able and shy. Because of this, the person who inflicted this torment on someone should be made to suffer a worse torment than the one that they inflicted their actions upon. When this occurs, the victim will begin to emerge from their 'shell' and become more socially able. Following the punishment of the bully , he/she will undoubtably feel that if they are to continue with the way they were going, it will simply reoccur. Bullies who observe this will also be made to think similarly therefor, theoretically, ending the cycle of bullying.

In many ways I think that humiliation can stop bullying because it shows how it feels to be laughed at and be treated badly, because just giving them a detention will only last a small amount of time and you can have lots of them and have no effect on you, when humilliation is permeant because you don't forget it because it is mentally done. Also it does not harm them physical and is not against the law so is easy to use and can not be told of for.

I don't not agree with humiliating a bully. The reason I say this is because if you lower yourself to there level I think that you are being just the same as the bully is.

I think that humliating a bully does not really solve anything in the long term. Although it may make the bully leave the person alone and although bullies should be punished as they are wrong, you still have to consider what the bully may be feeling after being humilated. This asks many questions and makes you wonder who the bully actually is? You may say you are justifying what the bully did to you, but in my opinion it is not acheving anything and means you are just as bad as him.

Bullying can be done in a number of different ways. Dependent on this, the punishment should be dealt. however it s never a good idea to fight fire with fire. Wouldn't you become the bully yourself if you humiliated the bully? in my opinion yes you would and this is is why i disagree with humiliating the bully. Effectively your are dropping yourself down to his level and this is never a good thing

I think Humilating the bully in public will do no harm. The bully should get bullied by older kids to see how he feels. He needs to learn respect. And really he is a hater who wants to be like the kid he bullied. If I was to be in the middle I would give a right old kick down the back side of the bully!!!

I think humiliating the Bully may not solve the problem but it will show everyone his true colours. If the Bully where to be exposed then maybe people will see what kind of person he is and see that really he's just a boy who doesn't have the simple manners to show another 'peer' or being some respect. On the other hand if a Bully was to be exposed in front of friends or family then the way the peers and family would see the Bully will change and could affect their relationship with them, it could also affect the Bullies life as not many people could put their trust into him not knowing if he would just abuse the respect.

I think that humiliating the bully does not do any good. I think this beacuse if you humilate the bully you are bullying yourself, and that is not right. I think the bully should be sorted in a more mannered way such as being talked to or getting support from family and trying to work through the problems he has that had

Oliver, you talk about getting someone else to 'sort it out'. Who would you ask for help in this situation and what might they do to help improve the situation?

I think humiliation is not a good punishment as the bully could cause a death for the victim so I think the bully should go to jail for a week

I think that humiliating a bully as a consequence for their actions is NOT the solution to the problem. Bullies bully because they feel that they superior over others. If he or she is humiliated, let's say by wearing girl's school uniform for a day, the bully will think that, due to them being humiliated ,they have lost their power over other children and would do more bullying to regain that superiority, he or she had before. If you want to punish a bully, take a civilized approach to it, but if it is a reoccurring problem or if what the bully did is serious than excessive punishment should be used such as expulsion or be put in juvenile (short-term).

I think humiliation can be one of many good punishments for a bully because I think it is important that they are taught a lesson as they can experience the horrible feeling of negativity and humiliation that they have done to others. This can make them be more disciplined for the future as they have learnt a lesson so they do not make the same mistakes improving them as a human being. Many people will argue that if these small things are corrected at an early age then there should be no hastle in the future.

Humiliating a bully would make them feel vulnerable, just like person who was bullied, but they’re not going to think much of it because they probably don’t know the people on the streets and he/she would never talk to them.

Bullying is a huge issue around the world and I think that humiliation is not the right way to deal with it. I think this because humiliation is a form of bullying and to punish someone by bullying them will not teach them to not bully I think it will give them more of a drive Isurgest the punishment should be seeing the parents of the child that you have bullied as you will still see the effects of your actions and see why it was wrong but also not been punished by being bullied yourself

Bullying is a very serious matter that affects everyday lives, but I don’t think humiliation will solve the problem. When you humiliate someone you make them feel bad about themselves and they will focus on what other people think about them instead of focusing on what they have done. Also humiliating someone is like bullying from the other end so the bully never really learns his lesson.

I think humiliating a bully can show that person just how it feels to be humiliated/bullied and how much it can hurt someone's feelings. I think that if the bully experiences that for themselves then they might stop what they are doing and realise that treating someone like that is wrong and they can learn from their mistakes. On the other hand if the bully gets humiliated by the same person who they picked on then that person would be just as him/her and therefore wouldn't solve anything.
